City of Lights

Paris. The city that has inspired poets and artists for centuries, with its iconic art and architecture, cafe culture and air of romance, has also inspired three overworked sisters-in-law; mothers to 9 1/2 children between us, to get off the treadmill of life for a long weekend and embark on the ultimate girls getaway. To celebrate our love affair with the city of lights, we indulged ourselves however briefly in everything from chocolate crepes to smooth local wine, sleeping in, facials, steam rooms, poring over original Monets and Van Gogh’s and the odd bit (um… hours and delicious hours!) of shopping. I still pinch myself wondering how we were able to pull this one off. If you’re planning your own trip soon, here are a few personal recommendations:

Sleep: Hotel Du Collectionneur

Visit: Musee D’Orsay

Shop: Marais

Eat: Cafe Du Commerce (Ainsley’s reco! Perfect in every way from soup to nuts.)

Onward. This week come join me for 3 fun and energising workouts:

Monday: Bums and Tums. Don’t miss tomorrow’s core-driven, challenging workout created for those of you (aka: all of us) interested in strengthening our mid-section.

Tone Up Tuesday: I’ll be armed with plenty of resistance bands so plan on waking up muscles that need waking up! Learn some new exercises that can easily be incorporated with your band while traveling or stuck at home while your little one naps.

Thursday: Cardio Zen: get your sweat on while feeling long and limber with this specially designed class for those in any stage of pre or postnatal fitness.

Ladies we will be starting a hydration challenge next week! Anyone interested in being more disciplined about the amount of water they drink should please email me… This is one of the easiest ways to increase energy, shed unwanted weight, prevent illness, have glowing skin, and purge toxins from your body. What’s the downside? Email me if you’re in.

See you this week!

Bon Nuit,
Kerri

Storytime, Workouts, Veggie Fries, and 5 Years of Wedded Bliss. The Stuff of Life.

The last story has been read, the last tooth has been brushed, the last block has been painfully tripped over. Just another relaxing weekend in the Holland household! How was everyone’s weekend? Brian and I celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary by going out to dinner at Flora Lima in Covent Garden (Peruvian, delish), followed by a brilliant performance of Miss Saigon at Prince Edward Theatre. I haven’t seen his play in many years and it definitely tugged at all the heart strings! Yes I am an emotional wreck during pregnancy. We spent this gorgeous fall day in Primrose Hill with friends for brunch and loads of playground action. Can’t beat London in the fall.

I have to share an incredible testimonial I received from BBC member Kim Hodge. Although Kim’s been nursing a sore foot as of late, if you’ve seen her recently you wouldn’t believe the transformation she has undergone! Aside from her weight loss, she just simply looks healthy, fit and fantastic. In her words:

“I have been attending Kerri’s Buggy Boot Camp for the past six months and both myself and my son are absolutely loving it! It’s a fantastic place to get fit, meet other new mums, and let the babies socialise together. Kerri is more than just an exercise instructor. As well as providing exciting, invigorating and varied workouts three times a week she has a holistic approach to the class setting optional extra ‘challenges’ including nutrition programmes. With Kerri’s guidance and support I have lost a whopping 33kg – just two more to go!”

If anyone else has a positive experience to share, please don’t hesitate. It is also important for new mums to know that women like you are feeling great and seeing results by regularly coming to class and participating in our challenges!

Here is what’s in store for the week:

Monday: Strengthen and lengthen: Tone up all over and lengthen your physique with a specific sequence that leaves no muscle untouched. A must for anyone looking to achieve definition in abs and arms.

Tuesday: Sixty Second Sweaty Circuit: loads of cardio, planks, and strength drills to have you glowing all day!

Thursday: the Feel-Good Workout: The cheapest therapy in London. Get those happy endorphins flowing, balance your mood swings, find yourself smiling at strangers without popping a single pill. All it takes is a little light cardio, a few isometric holds, and some deep stretching to relieve that unnecessary tension that drags us mothers down! Don’t deny yourself an hour of pure stress relief. Grab a friend and share the joy.

A quick recipe I have to share from my favorite recipe inspo site (toneitup.com)… This will quell any French fry (or chips, whatever you call them?!) craving you may be having with the cooler weather upon us. My kids gobbled them up so chalk one in the kid approval category:

Baked Veggie Fries:

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups of parsnips (my favorite), carrots, and beets, cut into 1/2″ strips
1 tbs fresh rosemary, finely chopped
1 tbs fresh thyme, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp sea salt or pink Himalayan salt
Fresh ground pepper to taste.

Preheat oven to 225C. Mix veggies, rosemary, garlic, thyme and oil on a baking sheet. Sprinkle with remaining seasonings and toss to coat. Spread veggies out in a single layer on baking sheet and roast for 15-20 minutes or until desired crispness. If desired, serve with your favorite dipping sauce!

Cheers,

The Cure For Anything Is Salt Water. Sweat, Tears, or the Sea.

A wise man once made a quote so famous it made it on a Sweaty Betty bag,

IMG_0383Even morning sickness 😉

#3 will be making his/her arrival in early March! For all of you who will still be bootcamping with me at that point, rest assured class will be running as usual at least halfway through February. After the baby arrives I will plan on taking 8 weeks off before resuming class in early May. Your memberships will freeze if you are on a 3 month plan and I will help coordinate your informal workouts in the park. If anyone could use some tips on managing morning sickness, screw ginger biscuits and peppermint tea. There’s an app for that! Research Nevasic, the app I downloaded on iTunes which has been a game-changer for me in managing morning sickness. All you need is your iPhone, earphones, and 27 minutes a day. Read all about it here: http://nevasic.com

One more week of friends, family, and beach yoga to cure all my ails before we head back! As much as I love London and can’t wait to get back, it’s going to be hard to leave home this time. We have had the most incredible time here in Newport, RI catching up with friends, family, and our favorite beach:

Has your membership lapsed or you have no plans to come back to class and/or otherwise would like to be removed from the email list? If so, please shoot me an email, I like to make sure I’m not spamming anyone! If you would like to stay on even though you’ve moved on, I will aim to make it worth your while with recipes, workouts, embarrassing and ridiculous stories about my life, and more 😉

Goodnight ladies!!
Kerri

It’s Monday. Don’t Forget to Be Awesome.

Happy Sunday ladies,

I hope you’ve had a relaxing couple days and are surviving this mini heat wave. I think the kind people at Posh Rosh on Fulham Road might still be laughing about the sweaty American who busted in on Friday and in one fell swoop cleared their shelves of all remaining fans, kiddie pools and sunscreen. Saturday evening we strolled over to Bishops Park for a viewing of throwback film Empire Records. Yes, this film is the very reason you tell your coworkers or husband “don’t let the man get you down” and “damn the man” after any grueling day at work. The setup was perfect: £10 gets you a seat with plenty of leg room on the grass under the stars with your blanket, cooler of cold drinks and takeout. I’m hard pressed to imagine a more perfect way to spend a lazy summer Saturday night. My, what an exciting life I lead 😉 Popupscreens.co.uk

Here’s what’s in store for the week:

Monday: Circuit: 45 seconds each station with plenty of water breaks to beat the heat!

Tuesday: Howdy Partner: pair up and hold each other accountable in this brand new partner workout to tone you from head to toe.

Thursday: Stretch and Sweat: get long and lean by alternating Pilates-inspired moves with plyometric cardio exercises to end the week with a gorgeous glow 😉

For those of you on the 6 Week Summer Slimdown cursing me for all this water you’ve been forced to drink daily, this: http://laurenconrad.com/blog/2013/08/sipping-pretty-fruit-herb-flavored-infused-water-recipes-allison-norton-august-2013/.

“Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy… sunshine almost always makes me high”- Dave Matthews Band

Hello ladies,

I recently had a blood test taken to determine the root cause of some ongoing sinus issues. Before the test was administered, the doctor told me that typically, there is a strong connection between Vitamin D deficiency and sinus infections. Her suspicions were confirmed, my Vitamin D levels tested at dangerously low levels (par for the course for a fair-skinned sunscreen junkie like me). As we live in the northern hemisphere, over 50% of us are deficient in this rock star vitamin. Although increasing your salmon intake does help, it is next to impossible to build up meaningful Vitamin D stores through food alone, so supplements were recommended. Before purchasing the vitamins I did a little research and was shocked to find out what a potent little vitamin can do for us from a holistic standpoint. Here are just a few of the bennys I thought would be of interest to you:

Increasing your Vitamin D intake can drastically reduce your risk of at least 11 different cancers, autoimmune diseases, anemia, the flu, upper respiratory infections. It can prevent acne, asthma, autism, IBS, the list goes on and on. Our vitamin D levels seem at least partially responsible for almost every aspect of our immunity health, and, it bears repeating, most of us are dangerously deficient!

images

Increasing your Vitamin D to healthy levels is linked to weight loss in overweight women, and deficiencies are linked to weight gain in women. Perhaps something to research further if, despite healthy diet and regular exercise, you cannot seem to budge that extra weight?: https://www.vitamindcouncil.org/?s=Weight+loss&submit=Submit

Anyone else have any personal experience with Vitamin D supplementation? I am somewhat new to this absolutely fascinating revelation and would love to learn more about it.

Feedback needed! Whole Foods Market is looking to offer us Buggy Bootcampers an exclusive series of workshops on everything from Healthy Eating to DIY Beauty. They promise to provide treats and valuable knowledge from their team of experts! They are even open to designing a workshop based on our interests/suggestions. Before we commit to them, please reply (only to me) whether getting to the store on High Street Ken would be most convenient to you straight after class, or in the evening (when a husband or sitter can take over)? Secondly, if we organized a class to take place close to the store in Kensington Gardens for this occasion would this be convenient for everyone? Please email me back and let me know your honest thoughts.

Welcome to your new week of workouts! Here’s what’s in store:

Sports Monday: if you aren’t finding yourself humbled by the performances in the World Cup, Tour de France, or Wimbledon, then I rest my case. Anyone who is finding themselves thoroughly inspired by these world class athletes can join me tomorrow as we reach the top of our game right here in Hyde Park!

Tabata Tuesday! Ramp up the intensity as we alternate between toning and cardio intervals. 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off for a burn that’ll earn you more than a few extra calories at dinner time.

Thursday: The Feel-Good Workout! This workout is designed to alleviate all those pesky aches and pains we experience as mothers of little ones. Strengthen weaknesses and correct muscle imbalances with unique toning exercises with a backdrop of heart pumping cardio to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul.

Looking forward to seeing you and your little ones this week!

Cheers,
Kerri

It Takes A Village

Hello all,

We have returned from the beautiful Forte Village in the Santa Margherita region of Sardinia. It was a week filled with sandy toes, pineapple shaped trees, exquisite seascapes, delicious Italian accents, Michelin-starred dining, noisy parrots, hot pink flamingoes and chilled local wine. Aside from a few wardrobe malfunctions and more than a few bug bites I think it’s safe to say this vaca truly had something for everyone:

Micky getting his kicks…

Massage on the beach? Yes please.

Yes this is what you think it is… You also would have been in heaven at 3 years old.

If any of you are interested in booking a similar trip, I can’t recommend Tots Too (totstoo.co.uk) enough, from scouring the most desirable family friendly resorts in the world to choosing the best flights, transfers with car seats, dietary needs, babysitting and kids club arrangements, this company offers a truly unparalleled service. We have a very informed and helpful contact in Mark Sumpter at Tots Too who also arranged our family vaca to Portugal last spring and has helped several other Buggy Bootcampers plan their getaways. If you’re interested in touching base with Mark, drop me a line and I’ll put you in touch!

As many of you are also crazy enough to merge the art of raising young children with the chaos of all-out traveling, it only makes sense to share our sanity-saving tools and tricks with each other. Some of you are flying as far as Australia and New Zealand with high energy toddlers in your laps and others are just looking to survive a day trip in London with your L.O. Whatever your upcoming travel itinerary looks like, here are a few tricks I’ve picked up along the way that might make your life a touch easier.

1.) are iPads not the best invention known to man? For heaven’s sake give them Dora. Peppa. Mickey Mouse. Magic Mike. (just making sure you’re paying attention?!) As much as they can handle on iTunes for £1.99. If buying yourself 19 minutes of silence on a frenzied travel day with kids is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.

2.) when your little one has graduated from the baby bjorn, and you can’t bear to break down yet another buggy at the airport gate, do yourself a favor and invest in one of these: https://www.littlelife.co.uk/product/child-carriers/ultralight-convertible-s3 Total lifesaver!

3.) stock up on the essentials: 3 extra plastic bags, 5 more nappies per kid than you anticipate needing, 2 additional changes of clothes than you anticipate needing, 5 more Ella’s Kitchens than you anticipate needing, a set of washable markers, bare skin, a lack of dignity and and a love of temporary tattoos.

4.) for those of you embarking on long flights with infants and dont want to rely on the bassinet seat at the bulkhead this is a must: http://flyebaby.com

5.) because the highchair miiiiight push you over luggage weight limits: http://www.totseat.com/english/home/

Do you have any genius travel-with-kids advice to share with the group? If so, do tell! I know I am forever looking for ways to make the process even marginally less painful… We’re all going through it so let’s share what we’ve learned with each other.

I can’t let another moment pass without thanking those of you who have been quite unexpectedly showering me with flowers, compliments on Facebook, etc, namely those of you who have moved or gone back to work or for whatever reason can no longer attend class. You know who you are. I am beyond touched by your kind gestures. You are talented, smart, beautiful and inspirational women and you make what I do on a daily basis extremely enjoyable. Thank you.

This week we have an action packed workout schedule so clear your calendars on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday morning:

Monday: circuit workout! 60 seconds of easy, moderate, and high intensity moves to get you looking totally chiseled for that summer wardrobe!

Tuesday: Cardioga: combine two of your fave workouts into one. Leave with a rosy glow and simply feel fab all day long.

Thursday: Pick-up Line workout! This workout we did back in February deserves another shot in the spotlight. Bonus points if you remember any of these cheesy one-liners ever being used on you back in your glory days (read: post braces, pre-kids).

Ciao bellas!! See you tomorrow!
Kerri

Irish Blessings

Ireland: home of castles, churches, cows, singalongs, leprechauns, shining rugged coastlines, guinness, green rolling hills, charming accents, and melt-in-your-mouth homemade brown bread. We spent the weekend in the lovely village of Galway and while I was a bit sad going home, I feel extraordinarily blessed to have had an entire weekend off-duty to spend some long overdue time with a handful of my favorite people in the world: 3 of my brothers and sisters and their wife/fiancé/girlfriend. If you fancy a trip to this charming part of the world and are looking for recommendations, stay here: http://www.thehousehotel.ie, go see: http://www.kylemoreabbey.com, grab a pint at: http://www.mcswiggans.ie, and enjoy a delicious meal at: http://www.whitegables.com.

I hope you also enjoyed your weekend wherever you were in the world. We are having class tomorrow for anyone at a loss for exciting bank holiday plans. Don’t miss:

Monday: Skinny Jeans Workout! For anyone struggling to retire the elastic waistband trousers, this one’s for you.

Tuesday: Bands and Benches: sculpt a long and lean look using your own body weight, plus the resistance of our benches and bands for full body toning.

Thursday: The Metric System. Come enjoy the endless benefits associated with isometric holds (think plank) and plyometrics (think high skips). Both will help you achieve a fit and healthy body in their own right. The perfect workout for those just getting back into it.

Fit Kits: available all week for purchase! £35 gets you your own resistance band, a comfy Buggy Bootcamp t-shirt, 3 at-home workouts and 3 delicious slimming smoothie recipes, plus the knowledge that you are making a difference for babies born too small, too soon, too sick to get the care they need to survive those first critical weeks of life. All proceeds go to the Bliss Foundation. Best money you’ll spend all week 😉

I have a great cleaner if anyone would like details! Hanna has helped us for the last 8 months and is wonderful. She is looking for additional work in central London at £10/hour on weekdays. I can’t recommend her highly enough. Let me know if you’d like her details!

Much love from your Irish American London resident, who couldn’t dance an Irish jig, make an edible apple pie, or keep calm and carry on if her life depended on it,
Kerri
